Patients with functional gastrointestinal disorders (FGID) represent a difficult contingent from a diagnostic and therapeutic point of view. The FGID symptoms result from the interaction of pathophysiological mechanisms with psychological factors. Emotional problems in persons with alexithymia may be expressed at somatic level (the process of somatization) and led to poor quality of life. Alexithymia is the psychological construct, specific for psychosomatic patients, and have been defined as the difficulty in recognition and description of emotions. FGIDs treatment should be carried out taking into account the psychological characteristics of the patient, including the correction of alexithymia.en_US
