Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) is the most frequent and severe cause of acute kidney injury (AKI) in infants and children. The most common etiology of HUS is enterotoxigenic strains of E. coli. Currently, the HUS is considered a systemic disease, characterized by microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, kidney damage, cardiovascular and neurological manifestations, hemorrhagic syndrome and others. Most HUS patients that require dialysis ultimately recover their kidney function.
