Cutaneous involvement, which is detected in 93% of lupus patients during the course of the disease, can present as LE-specific or LE-nonspecific lesions. According to Dusseldorf classification, cutaneous lupus is divided in four categories: acute, subacute, chronic and intermittent cutaneous lupus. The distinction between these categories and differential diagnosis is made according to clinical judgment based on laboratory results and histological changes of skin biopsy.
