Title: Controlled reperfusion and oxidative stress-induced lesions in experimental ovarian torsion/detorsion
Authors: Lazăr, Cornelia; Tagadiuc, O.; Misina, A.; Vozian, M.; Pantea, V.
Abstract: Ovarian torsion (OT), being a medical emergency,
requires being correctly treated in the early stages of the
disease, because reperfusion (R) injury may worsen
existing lesions, leading to ovarian loss.
The purpose of our study was to investigate the
advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP) changes in
rats’ serum subjected to different OT/detorsion models.
Materials and methods. 70 healthy female rats (Rattus
albicans), were randomized into 7 groups (n=10): nr. 1:
healthy rats – no intervention; nr. 2: the sham group
(laparotomy); nr. 3, 4 and 5 – OT for 3 hours and 3 hours
ischemia with 1 hour R or 1 hour “on-off “ R; nr. 6 and 7: 3

hours OT and 24 hours R or 24 hours “on-off “ R. The “on-
off method”: controlled R by opening and closing the clips

that were applied on the ovarian annexes (on/off) in 10-
seconds intervals, for a total of 120 seconds.
AOPP level wàs measured in the blood serum samples
by Capeillère-Blandin C., et al. method (2004). The results
were analyzed by Welch’s ANOVA.
Results. A statistically significant higher AOPP
level was established in rats’ serum to 24 hours R following
OT (mean±SE, 33,23±0,59 μM/L, p=0,001), compared
with group nr. 1. The “on-off “ reperfusion method resulted
in a decrease in AOPP, 24 hours after “on-off “ reperfusion
(26,58±0,56 μM/L, p<0,001).
Conclusions: “On-off” method of R minimizes the
reperfusion injury in OT.
