Abstract Background: Different methods of teaching anatomy are discussed in this work: traditional methods, such as didactic lectures and cadaver-based learning, and modern methods, using computerized and imaging technologies. Development of the medical science and modernization of technologies used in the medical practice brought many new disciplines in the medical curricula. Anatomy, which has been a cornerstone of medical education, turned out to be cut in teaching time and, as a result, in its learning content. This raised an issue of safety in treatment of patients. Giving more value to modern technologies in an educational process (models, visualization, imaging, interactive multimedia etc.) and due to this reducing or excluding traditional methods in teaching anatomy, such as dissection and prosection, may aggravate the situation in learning anatomy even more. Conclusions: Further development of new diagnostic methods, emergency procedures, plastic and endoscopic surgery require precise anatomical knowledge of normal structures and their variations that make the study of anatomy remain essential to safe medical practice. The balance between new and old methodologies combined with the clinical approach should be found to consolidate anatomical knowledge that is needed not only for future surgeons but for all doctors to improve their understanding of a disease, its diagnosis and treatment of a patient.en_US
