Myasthenia gravis represents one of the great medical triumphs of the last half century. However, problems and questions remain. The mortality rate for Myasthenia gravis has not decreased over the last 30 years; reports suggesting that the documented increased prevalence of Myasthenia gravis is due to better survival more likely reflect improved case ascertainment in the elderly. Thymectomy remains as the optimal treatment of choice in patients with myasthenia gravis, however, the selection criteria for surgery remains controversial. Neoplastic pathology of the thymus gland associated with myasthenia gravis or myasthenic syndrome causes a range of medical problems that need application of complex therapy, a very important role being plaid by preoperative preparation and postoperative management of patients.
