Abstract: Background. As a consequence of the chronic inflammatory process, children with rheumatic conditions can present with both - variable degree of joint pain and limitation of the range of motion, the last one, sometimes being followed by ankylosis. Objective of the study. Assessment of serum level of 25-OH vitamin D in children with rheumatic conditions and glucocorticoteroid treatment (GCS). Material and Method. Twenty four (24) children with confirmed rheumatic conditions treated with systemic glucocorticosteroids were included in the study. All the patients received GCS, with an average duration of 28,02±27,74 months. The assessment of 25-OH vitamin D was done through immunoenzymatic assay. Results. The average value of total serum 25-OH vitamin D in children included in the study was 14,57±5,66 ng/ml. Suboptimal level was detected in 51,72% of children (range 20-50 ng/ml). Importantly, in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis average level of vitamin D was 135±63,87 ng/ml. Patients with connective tissue diseases had an average level of total serum vitamin D of 12,44 ±5,25 ng/ml. Conclusion. These findings could serve as a base for recommendations aiming the prevention of vitamin D deficiency in patients with chronic rheumatic conditions. Introducere.
