Stroke is one of the most important public health issues, with a strong socio-economic impact worldwide and is also a major cause of disability in highly developed countries. The current incidence of stroke and the lack of effective treatment measures have led to the need for further research risk factors. The metabolic syndrome represents one of most important elements of the pathogenesis of strokes. Insulin resistance is proposed as the basic factor that determines other disorders in this syndrome. Atherosclerosis, regarded as a metabolic complication, pay attention towards peroxisome proliferator activated receptors (PPAR), transcription factors involved in lipid metabolism, inflammation and atheromatosis.
