The authors illustrate the variety and severity of postoperative complications that develop after primary surgical
treatment of congenital esophageal atresia, including: anastomotic dehiscence, recurrence of tracheoesophageal fistula,
vocal cord dysfunction, postoperative dysmotility, anastomotic strictures. Attention is drawn to the increased rates of
morbidity and mortality in these complications, describing some diagnostic difficulties and treatment options. The
authors conclude that each of the potential complications of esophageal atresia is a significant problem and a challenge
in the management of this serious malformation in children, requiring the development of new prevention measures and
treatment methods.
