dc.description.abstract The goal of this review is to place the existing knowledge regarding the types 1, 2, and 3 (D1, D2, and D3, respectively) iodothyronine deiodinases into a biochemical context. This article reviews new data regarding the mechanism of selenoprotein synthesis, the molecular and cellular biological properties of the individual deiodinases, including tissue distribution, subcellular localization, enzymatic properties, and regulation of synthesis, inactivation, and degradation. Also the molecular mechanisms are elucidated through which the deiodinases regulate the thyrotropin secretion, the homeostasis of circulating and intracellular triiodthyronine.
