Background: Regardless of the reason for amputation the rehabilitation of patients with amputated limbs is very difficult and complex. The paper
includes the statistical study of in-patients from the Department of Atypical and Complicated Prosthesis within the Republican Center of Experimental
Prosthesis, Orthopedics and Rehabilitation, distributed in the wards according to the amputation reasons.
Material and methods: During the study period of 2007-2010 1283 clinical cases of the patients were examined, to 466 of which the prostheses
were put for the first time and to 823 – for the second time. By the level of amputation 40% of the patients had amputation at thigh, 45% of cases had
tibial amputations and 4% had foot amputations (by Pyrogov-Shopart). During the hospitalization period the treatment of the patients consisted of
orthopedic assistance, psychological support, drug therapy and functional physio therapy. The programs were selected individually, in advance and
were of continuous character.
Results: The model of the program of physiotherapy functional rehabilitation presented in the paper reflects the multilateral approach in the complex
treatment of patients with amputated limbs. The identification of the most effective methods from the organizational viewpoint and the selection of
functional physiological programs, tailored for the patients with amputated limbs, aims at the recovery of ability to work, the improvement of life quality
and optimal social integration.
Conclusions: The statistical analysis of the pathologies leading to the amputation of limbs in the future will determine the correct behavior of
secondary prophylaxis, avoiding surgical consequences. The interdisciplinary approach in setting the treatment goals for the patients with amputated
limbs determines the efficiency of the complex rehabilitation. |
