Abstract:
Background: The work is relevant due to the need to reduce the number of complications after enucleation of the eyeball. The work determines clinical
and morphological features of changes in the optic nerve and conjunctiva tissues after using electric current of high frequency at enucleation of the eyeball.
Material and methods: 59 patients with uveal melanoma previously subjected to enucleation with high frequency electric welding have been
investigated. The control group consisted of 20 patients with uveal melanoma, who had been subjected to enucleation by usual methods.
Results: The obtained results have shown that the use of high frequency welding for eye enuсlеation allows to avoid bleeding when muscles and
neurovascular fascicle are crossed, to reach necessary fixation of muscles to Tenon’s capsule and stable connection of conjunctive margins to each other
without the use of any suture material. The use of this method reduces duration of surgery (on average by 6.6 minutes), saves the patients from removal
of stitches, can reduce the time a patient stays in hospital by 2 days (i. e. 28.5%) and therefore gives economic benefits.
Conclusions: The clinical and histological studies showed the benefit of the enucleation technique using high-frequency electric welding compared
with the conventional method. The established character of the postoperative period course shows that this method can be the method of choice if it is
necessary to remove the eyeball.
