Ethical dilemmas of cyborgization in the context of scientific and technical progress

Abstract

Background. Scientific and technical progress has a defining influence on the biomedical world. Cardiostimulators, cochlear implants, exoskeletons, neuroprostheses, being widely applied in medicine, generate a series of ethical questions and dilemmas. Objective of the study. Analysis and elucidation of the cleavages between bioethical principles and the proliferation of the cyborgization phenomenon in the treatment and improvement of the patient's quality of life. Material and Methods. The study is based on the analysis of bibliographic sources published in scientific databases (Pub Med, Research Gate) in the period 2010-2021. Research methods: analytical, comparative, sociological, bioethical, etc. Results: The main bioethical problems generated by the proliferation of cyborgization in medicine aim to improve the human body, the aspiration for perpetuity in the context of an overpopulated planet, the attack on the integrity of the human genome, unfair access to cyber technology due to high costs, increase of the financial discrepancy between social classes, the risk of cyber-attacks on medical devices. Conclusion. Despite the major advances in science, the treatment of the patient must be accomplished through the prism of the biopsychosocial model, carefully analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of the influence of new technologies on the human body, both for the patient and for society in general.

Introducere. Progresul științifico-tehnic exercită o influență definitorie asupra lumii biomedicale. Cardiostimulatoarele, implanturile cohleare, exoscheletele, neuroprotezele, toate acestea, fiind deja aplicate pe larg în medicină, generează un șir de întrebări și dileme etice. Scopul lucrării. Analiza și elucidarea clivajelor dintre principiile bioetice și proliferarea fenomenului cyborgizării în tratamentul și ameliorarea calității vieții pacientului. Material și Metode. Studiul este bazat pe analiza surselor bibliografice publicate în baze de date știițifice (Pub Med, Research Gate) în perioada 2010-2021. Au fost utilizate metode de cercetare precum: analitică, comparativă, sociologică, bioetică etc. Rezultate. Principalele probleme bioetice generate de proliferarea fenomenului cyborgizării în medicină vizează ameliorarea organismului uman, aspirația spre perenitate în contextul unei planete suprapopulate, atentatul la integritatea genomului uman, accesul inechitabil la cybertehnologii din cauza costurilor mari, accentuarea decalajelor financiare dintre păturile sociale, riscul cyber-atacurilor asupra dispozitivelor utilizate. Concluzii. În pofida progreselor majore ale științei, tratamentul pacientului trebuie efectuat prin prisma modelului biopsihosocial, analizând minuțios avantajele și dezavantajele influenței noilor tehnologii asupra organismului uman, atât pentru pacient, cât și pentru societate în general.
