dc.description.abstract The article presents international and national data on some categories of neonates at risk, such as preterm newborns and low birth weight (LBW) newborns. Like other countries, the Republic of Moldova does not routinely collect data on small for gestational age newborns. In the period 1990-2021 in the Republic of Moldova there is no great dissociation between the share of premature children and those with LBW. During the study period, a decrease in the rate of children with LBW from 6.06% to 5.73% and an increase in the rate of premature newborns from 5.3% to 6.2% is noticed. The prevalence of children with LBW until 2015 indicates that this phenomenon has also spread to full-term children due to growth restriction and intrauterine undernutrition causing fetal adaptation with risk of adverse effects in later life. en_US
